Technology alone changed our lifestyle in almost every aspect, whether you want to communicate a buddy of yours living in another part of the world or transfer money to your family whenever they need. Every single thing you can think of has changed in a radical way by the touch of technology, educational system is no exceptional. It is scientifically proved that an online steaming video or a webcast can help students in a more specific way, whether they are going to track the movement of quantum particles or measure the atmospheric components. Technology reveals a better way of understanding of complex three dimensional structures of mechanical and medical related contents.

There are, however, some negative thoughts about this new education-delivery system. Some holds the thought that online learning can be a success if only it is applied on teaching STEM subjects, i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Language, literature, social and political studies, history and the rest are best delivered if it is done traditionally. But no matter how this debate goes on online learning continues to be a vital part of educational system.

On What Ground Online Learning Is Gaining Its Popularity?

Wonder how Trevor MacNeice, a student working on two shifts in McDonald completed his MBA in management and got a job with a handsome salary package after few years of hard working? Well, he has been told to believe by a friend that online courses are the only option available to obtain such a degree. He did some research on online education and started saving money immediately after he was convinced about it.

Alternate Learning Pathway

Online education has paved the way for an alternative learning pathway which not only provides a wide range of learning options but also an opportunity of obtaining alternative credentialing. Whether you are in pursuit of a higher degree or want to do a course on computer programing language, online education serves it all.

Better Accessibility

One of the interesting facts of online learning is that students can access the course material anytime they want irrespective of their engagement in any other work, which means they can continue their studies in the lunch time during a work-shift, or in the middle of a music class through mobile. A recent research shows that accessing the web-courses through smart phone has increased in the US in 2009 from 18% to 64%. This clearly shows the popularity that online learning is gaining among the students.

A Support For Adults

Online education, by all means, has been acting as a supportive element to the adult learners also. Not only is it arming them with new skills required for a career growth but also making them technically acknowledged with various online educational tools like computers, smart phones, projectors, etc.

It Costs Less

Online education allows the learners to choose from several courses which costs less than a half of what they had to spend in traditional educational institutes. No matter what course you choose you have to pay less than what u thought. Working as a part-timer? Start doing online courses with your savings.

To be exact, online learning is an upgraded version of traditional face-to-face learning. It focuses on the result of learning rather that learning itself. A degree is utterly meaningless if it not directs to a better career or brighter future. Online education fills the need of career oriented learning. It delivers exactly the education that the traditional learning in a bricks-and-mortar classroom fails to provide.

5 innovations of last decade, with the potential to change education system

With the advent of advanced technology, the defining elements of ‘education’ (what we meant by the word in conventional sense), are even changing. Things like chalk, duster, pen (inseparably attached with ‘education’, when we picturise) are getting influenced crucially and critically, giving these things new definition with new structure, keeping the utility intact. Even classrooms are getting obsolete, with this age of video conferencing, effectively and efficiently replacing classrooms. for the better. “[Teachers] can focus on great instruction and then look for the tools and resources that allow you to do that efficiently and effectively,” says Scott Kinney, senior vice president of Discovery Education, a company that helps integrate technology into classrooms. Especially, in the first world countries like United States of America, techology is quickly replacing classrooms, taking education to a new level. The Huffington Post – the reputed American online news aggregator, on its 10th anniversay, takes a look into some of the world-changing technologies introduced in the last decade, with the potential to change the world (of education) forever.

New types of Chalkboards

New digital chalkboards are replacing traditional boards in their facilities, without the hazard of erasing the already written material and writing something new to proceed further in class. In this new boards, the teacher can project multiple related elucidating data at the same time, making the learning process more lucid and time-managed. Even instructive videos without having to set up another device and projection screen, can be displayed this way. This ‘smart’ boards even make the teacher send saved notes to the student, virtually.

Remote learning

New technological ways of making contact with a student in home or in a far away location, is making giving instructions, explanations and even elucidating interactions with online sessions possible which are as effective as classroom learning. People in certain medical conditons or in physical situations where one is inadvertently confined in a small place and unable to go to attend class, remote learning identical to classroom learning in quality, is making even heavily ‘snowy days’ fully workable !

eBooks

Electronic books, the exact electronic copies of traditional textbooks, are easy to store, do not require printing, binding, can be delivered (transferred) without a hazard just by the click of a button (without the physical delivery process involved) and easy to update. World famous online companies like Amazon Kindle, Pearson are offering eBooks which also provide facilities in studying, technically, by making taking notes, highlighting passages, searching for the meaning of new words an integral part of the eBook and learning process just by the click of a button. Apple’s iBook offering interactive digital textbooks from companies like Pearson. Also, ‘techbook’, a customized electronic form of ‘book’ providing the content of a textbook, is providing translation option for conversion into foreign languages, targeting a larger readership including non-english speakers.

Computer-based testing

Computer-based testing (paperchecking, determination of scores etc.) are making the job of the teacher easier. Online exams with multiple choice questions only, are easy to evaluate by the means of computer, as it matches the answer with the given option in the answersheet and marks accoringly. But, internet as information provider can so easily give information that students can use them in answering questions during exams accessing the source alongside, when it’s illegal to take help. Although there are tools like TurnItIn, that can help teachers catch the cheting equally easily.

Educational games

To make education an enjoyable thing, appealing to the students’ natural curiosity of problem and puzzle solving are the educational games. Even attracting learning challenged students, games have added a new dimension to education. SimCity EDU, for example, is one of the instances.

In Huffington Post’s own words : “Over the last 10 years, technological innovations have made education more interactive, immediate and personalized”… even surpassing (going beoynd) the very originality of classroom education.

Higher Education Transforming Technologies

The most prominent feature of modern day higher education is the use of virtual reality. Both thoeretically and technically, online study material, in the form of e-books, articles etcetera are changing the landscape of education. The teacher physically standing in front of a handful of lucky, selected students in the physical environment of a reputed institution, like a university, is loosing its appeal in an all inclusive globally connected network of innumerable learners, all eager to test their luck in grasping the latest research. The following are the modern technical features of the ‘digital age’, with the potential for changing modern higher education.

Absorbing technologies

Use of social networking sites

Social networking sites are providing interactive environments even with foreign students, supplementing classroom education. Those who can not attend the class are getting complemented by the discussions, tips, commentaries, or finding it a made-easy or even an alternative of classroom education. At par with modern way of educating through online conferences, social networking sites are coming upto the expectation of students with greater autonomy and open forum.

Audio-visual sessions, in education

Classroom presentation with video, makes the content of study much more appealing than only reading books and imagining, where in audio-visual rounds you can practically satisfy your senses and have an actual real idea about a condition of physical world. It is also easy to disseminate across the internet to catch the global audience, with the help of service (platform) providing websites like Youtube.com . For those who can not afford campus education, learning from the digitized video from a distance can be as good as classroom learning.

Wearable gadgets and accessories

Wearables like Google Glasses, which are at the initial stage of development, can be a version of remote sensors making interaction between a distant student and a teacher possible. Giving feeling like real-life experience, it can make things like ‘online convocation’ possible, for example.

3D printers

3D printers can provide artistic reconstruction, producing exact miniature replicas of things to be studied, with the potential of revolutionizing education in unimaginably novel ways.

Drones

This popular war technology is getting entry in universities as well, where to capture glimpses of flora and fauna or mapping of different sorts, with a chance of getting used in study, droning technology is getting used increasingly day by day.

Modern technology has the ability to replace real world with a simulated one. It’s only a nick of time, that it transforms education to a different level.

Nigeria Has The Highest Number Of Out of School Children, Says UN

There is no doubt that education is one of the basic pillars of economic and national development. It is only by providing accessible and abundant learning opportunities that a nation can empower its communities to develop and prosper. However, currently the Nigerian education sector is suffering to a great extent primarily due to unstable governments, political disturbances, corruption and limited financial support. Hence, numerous academic experts and stakeholders opine that the academic sector will face further problems in case the current scenario continues.

Poor Education Practices

According to a new report published by UNESCO, Nigeria, along with Ethiopia, Pakistan and Chad are among the nations which are drastically off target for the 6 key academic goals which 164 nations agreed to accomplish 2000 and 2015. The study, which was launched in Santiago de Chile, New Delhi, New York and Paris, revealed that Nigeria is among the worst education systems in the world due to poor investment, conflict and corruption. Moreover, it also has the highest number of kids out of school.

Back in 2000, around 164 nations had agreed to attempt to accomplish the 6 key educational goals in the coming 15 years, objectives which enhanced the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals) that were also being set. These 6 goals included getting all children enrolled in primary schools, reducing adult illiteracy and making sure that all girls had equivalent access to education. The UNESCO report stated that around 50 per cent of the countries had more or less failed to get all kids enrolled in primary schools, 75 per cent nations were unable to reduce illiteracy significantly, and over half of the countries could not eradicate gender disparities at school.

Achieving Academic Goals

Where Nigeria, Ethiopia, Niger, Pakistan and Chad were identified as the ones way off target in achieving the 6 key goals, countries like India, Tanzania, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Nepal and Afghanistan were praised for their successful efforts. Getachew Engida, Deputy Director General at UNESCO, said “Personally I feel countries that committed themselves haven’t delivered and they should, and we need to keep reminding them of that,” while launching the EFA (Education for All) Global Monitoring report. Engida added “There is no other alternative than simply saying ‘Please commit yourself and once you’ve committed, deliver’. We continue to pass on that message but we haven’t been fully successful.”

In the last few years several countries have substantially boosted investment in education. More than 38 nations increased academic spending by 1 per cent or more of the national income between the years 1999 and 2012. However, the fact remains that education is often not identified as a priority in several national budgets; while countries with low income relying on overseas aid for development to support academic programmes, according to the report.

After the goals were finalised, in the first 10 years foreign education aid increased to $13.9 billion in 2010, but unfortunately came to a halt due to the global financial crisis. Then it decreased to $12.6 billion in the past 2 years, said UN Officials.

The Bottom Line

At present, Nigeria needs to take all the necessary steps to ensure that is academic system is improved significantly so that Nigerian children can get the education they deserve and build their future.
